We’ve got a lot happening this June! Two exciting class series and our third annual Underground Competition throwdown! (Note that the competition information & details are located at the bottom of this post)

Solo jazz is an integral part of swing dancing, and this June Emory will be covering different elements and variations of classic solo jazz movements as well as how to take them and implement them within your partnered dancing.

Continuing on from last month with more basics of Lindy Hop, Kelly Palmiter will be focusing on six count swing and how it fits in with eight count! Learn how to blend the two together to create a seamless flow in your dancing!

Are you a first-timer? Need a refresher on the basics? We have a beginner’s drop-in class that comes FREE with purchase of the evening dance!

COMPETITION INFORMATION:

It’s back and better than ever – are you ready to throw down at The Underground Dance Community’s third annual Jack-and-Jill competition? Featuring fantastic prizes, some great surprises, and not one but TWO levels of competition: a Novice and an Open, this year is guaranteed to be the best one yet!

Competing not your thing? No problem! In addition to the competitions, there will also be social dancing all night long!

Join us for food beforehand at a local restaurant in downtown Grand Rapids, and if you’re coming from out-of-town housing is available!

Pricing:

This special Saturday event costs $10 to attend, and entering the competitions is free. As always, the driver of a carpool that has at least two people in it and is coming from at least an hour away gets in for FREE!

Competition details:

What is a Jack-and-Jill?

A Jack-and-Jill is a specific type of swing dance contest where all leads are paired randomly with follows and dance to random swing songs.

Novice Jack-and-Jill: New to dancing? Never competed before? Nervous about trying? This is the perfect competition for you! It’s a fun, friendly, and easy way to try out competing! If you’ve made finals in a swing competition before, consider entering the open instead, and if you’ve placed in any swing competition before, you may not enter the novice.

Open Jack-and-Jill: Bring the heat in this competition as anyone is welcome to participate, there are no restrictions on who may enter! Swing out hard and go for gold!

Rules:
1) Partners are paired randomly
2) No choreography is allowed
3) No lifts or drops are allowed
4) Content must be 80% swing dancing or greater

Evening Schedule:

7pm-12am: Open Dancing
8pm: Novice Jack-and-Jill prelims
8:30pm: Open Jack-and-Jill prelims
10pm: Novice Jack-and-Jill finals
11pm: Open Jack-and-Jill finals

We’re featuring two class series in May!

Beginner Lindy Hop Series:

Coming up in May is a beginner swing dance series starting on Monday, May 1st, and that night is FREE! No partner? No experience? No problem! If you’ve always wanted to learn how to dance, there’s no better opportunity! Listed below is the event information.

Come learn to swing dance! With roots back to the 1920’s at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem New York, Lindy Hop is the original swing dance filled with fun, energy, and style!

The Tranky Doo:

This coming May, the Underground Dance Community is offering a beginner Lindy Hop lesson series to introduce you to this fantastic style of dance by taking you through the foundational concepts and then building from there to help you understand how it all works. The first night, May 1st, is completely FREE!

Instructors Brianna and Kelly bring their expertise and joy of the dance to help everyone have a great time both in class and on the dance floor! Don’t miss this opportunity to make Monday nights the highlight of your week! No experience or partner required – come dance with us!

Also featured is in May is a solo jazz series on the line dance called the Tranky Doo! It’s is a classic swing line dance dating back to the original swing era. Filled with solo jazz movements and is done at dances all around the globe, soon to also be done at the Underground! You won’t want to miss this!

Learn to swing out to the high energy, quick tempo songs you love! Ike and Sarah will be focusing on making your dancing look tight and clean at faster tempos, as well as teaching some new tricks to bring your dancing to the next level!

April 10th is the Underground’s first ever Community Performance Night! Never performed before and want to try? There’s no better opportunity! Are you a veteran of the stage who’s done many showcases? Show us what you’ve got! All skill levels, all dance styles, and all performances are encouraged to sign up – Come take the stage and help show off the talent that we have in our community, whether it’s a three minute, one person solo blues performance or a thirty second, twenty-two person lindy hop one, we want to see YOU come rock it out! This March, in addition to our intermediate series, we’re also featuring for the first time ever classes on St. Louis Shag!

St. Louis Shag was developed in conjunction with Lindy Hop, and offers a whole different perspective on how to move to the music. Brianna and Casey will take you through the fundamentals and get you rocking this style of swing on the floor!

In “Step Up Your Swing,” Ashley and David are refining technical aspects of both six and eight count, and then moving on to new ground with them.
